FULL BOOK REVIEW: Marley and Me

FULL BOOK REVIEW: Marley and Me.

I finished reading this book. It’s called “Marley and me” by John Grogan. Believe it or not, this is just my 3rd book ("above 300 page" category) I successfully read cover to cover since January 2008. I tend to read often but struggled to finish most books. This book is special to me as it’s in a nutshell about “life and love of a Labrador” which I’m coincidentally also a Proud Owner of one (mine’s Golden Labrador, “Pluto”). Hence, my immediate bond with the book as I can easily imagined his descriptions about Marley’s mischievous actions.

The book I’m holding is a Special UK edition (1st 2006 edition) with 8 pages of photos of Marley (16 photos total throughout the book) in the middle of the book, better paper quality bigger text and an appended column reprinted from “Philadelphia Inquirer, January 6 2004” at the end of the book. I bought it at Popular Bookstore with 30% discount. I’m disappointed to say that Current 2007 “2nd US edition” COSTS THE SAME as my edition (BEFORE DISCOUNT @ RM32.90).

But it came with 1) poorer paper quality, 2) Only 2 Marley photos throughout the book, 3) Smaller fonts. 4) No “Philadelphia Inquirer” article found in my book.

I read the first 110 page in 1 sitting, something I RARELY done. For the record, 1 read 1 ppm (page per minute). The book is so good that I look forward to it each time I pick it up. The book with intense appeal it tenderly follows its subject from sunrise to sunset, from the Hilarious puppy stage (laughed at first half of the book) to the heartbreaking farewell (so much so that my tears flowed freely at the end of the book).

Here’s an interesting extract of the book well worth reading it’s in page 30 to 32 in my book

“Marley was growing at a furious pace. Like one of those amazing jungle vines that can cover a house in hours, he was expanding exponentially in all directions. Each day he was a little longer, a little wider, a little taller, a little heavier. He was 21 pounds when I brought him home and within weeks was up to 50. His cute little puppy head that I so easily cradled in one hand as I drove him home that first night has rapidly morphed into something resembling the shape and heft of a blacksmith’s anvil.

His paws were enormous, his flanks already rippled with muscle and his chest almost as broad as a bulldozer. His slip of a puppy tail was becoming as thick and powerful as an otter’s.

What a tail it was, every last object in our house that was at knee level or below was knocked asunder by Marley’s wildly wagging weapon. He cleared coffee tables, scattered magazines… sent beer bottles and wineglasses flying. He even cracked a pane in the French door. Gradually every item that was not bolted down migrated to higher ground safely above the sweep of his swinging mallet… Our friends with children would visit and marvel “Your house already babyproofed!”

Marley didn’t actually wag his tail. He more wagged his whole body, starting with his front shoulder and working backward. He was like a canine version of slinky. We swore there were no bones inside him, just one big, elastic muscle. Jenny began calling him “Mr. Wiggles”.

And in no time did he wiggle more than when he had something in his mouth. His reaction to any situation was the same: grab the nearest shoe, pillow or pencil – really, any item will do – and run with it. Some little voice in his head seemed to be whispering to him, “Go ahead! Pick it up! Drool over it! Run!”.

Some of his objects he grabbed were small enough to conceal, and this especially pleased him – he seemed to think he was getting away with something. But Marley would never made it as a poker player. When he had something to hide, he could not mask his glee. He was always on the rambunctious side, but then there was those moments when he would explode into a manic sort of hyperdrive, as if some invisible prankster had just goosed him. His body will quiver, his head will bob from side to side, and his entire rear end would swing in a sort of spastic dance. We called it the “Marly Mambo”.

“All right, what have you got this time?” I’d say and as I approached he would begin evasive action, wagging his way around the room, hips sashaying, head flailing up and down like a whinnying filly’s so overjoyed with his forbidden prize he could not contain himself. When I would finally cornered and pry open his jaws, I never came up empty-handed. Always, there was something he had plucked out of the trash or off the floor or, as he got taller, right off the dining room table. Paper towels, wadded Kleenex, grocery receipts, wine corks, paper clips, chess pieces, bottle caps… One day I pried open his jaws and peered in to find my paycheck plastered to the roof of his mouth.”.

The author, John Grogan tells a simple story of one family’s life, a mostly typical family. But he does it so beautifully and the reader (yours truly included) is drawn in by his “voice” until you become part of his tale, shaking your head at Marley, laughing at his wits, delighting in his high points and worrying when things aren’t going well. You’ll understand the gift that Marley was to his family.

Grogan has crafted a loving but unsentimental memory of his dog and what he meant to him, his wife and children. That’s his gift to us, this book I’m holding. This is a book with intense but narrow appeal that it’s strictly limited to anyone who has ever had, known or wanted a dog.

Goodbye SE K810i, Hello SE K850i

Above, this is how my previous phone looks like...

In case you are wondering what "SE" Stands for, it's SONYERICSSON. Yup, I bought a new handphone to replace my K810i. It's no other than K850i. Colour: Silver Blue (new colour). I bought this phone for RM500 after selling off my 9 months old K810i for RM400. Why I ended up buying this phone?

I originally paid a RM80 booking for SE C902 Titanium Silver James Bond Edition. But at RM1200, I don't have the money to pick up as I can't find my Public Bank PASSBOOK. I told the shop ("Venus Comm" in Digital Mall, PJ) that I will collect 1 week later. Well, 1 week passed and I still can't raise cash to pick up the "James Bond Phone".

To cut the story short, I only managed to raise RM1000. Went back to the shop, Looked at other options, realised that I can get a "BETTER EQUIPPED BUT THICKER PHONE" for RM9xx including Warranty Extension (to 18 mts phone and 12 mts LCD). It's no other than "Silver Blue" SonyEricsson K850i.

The Screen is bigger (2.2" vs 2"), ALSO Touch screen menu, Xenon instead of LED Flash, Cool backlights (See picture below), BETTER Camera and Picture Quality overall. Only "letdown" is that the phone had been in the MARKET for 12 months, compared to NEWLY LAUNCHED TWO WEEKS AGO James Bond Edition.

FINAL WORD: NO REGRET buying This phone though I COULD HAVE been 1 OF THE 1st Owner to own a JAMES BOND PHONE Sigh...

Here's MORE PICTURES of the K850i...

TARA 3: Congratulations Sam & Vince

TARA 3: CONGRATULATIONS Sam & Vince...

Some of you will ask, what is "TARA 3"? Well it stands for "The Amazing Race Asia 3" which ended recently. The season premiered on September 11, 2008 and consists of 11 episodes, two episodes less than the first and second seasons. The season finale aired on November 20, 2008. This season had 20 teams racing across 4 continents covered 50,000 kilometres (32,023 miles) in 24 days. AND THE WINNER IS?

CONGRATULATIONS Sam and Vince!

My (oto-reviewer's) Thoughts:

This season's race was also known as "The Toughest Race Ever". I agree, BUT there's something missing from Season 2. Here's my series of questions:

1) Where is "Intersection (or 2 teams working together)?
2) Why ALL countries they went confined to Asia?
(Last Season at least they went to Czech Republic).
3)Why 5 eliminations in A ROW?

AND LASTLY,
4) WHY ARE THEY SO MANY CELEBRITIES in the Show? If you want celebrities, 2 teams will do. But here we have "TWO Ex-MISS UNIVERSE", TWO MODEL/ACTRESS (Ida and Bernie, the latter's 1990s Supermodel), TWO Stand-up comedians (Sam and Vince)... It's OVERLOADED with CELEBRITIES. Please GIVE CHANCES to the Public (in TARA 4), finger's crossed...

Overall, besides the above questions, I kinda enjoyed the Reality TV Show. But I missed "HILARIOUS" teams such as MARDY and MARSIO (M&M) (season 1) and MARC and ROVILSON (Season 2). The FORMER INSPIRED me as I'm their SIZE. If M&M can do bungee, I CAN, if they can dive, I can, if they can eat GROSS foods I CAN... Also the unforgettable quotes: "I like to eat but I select what I eat!" AND "Mardieee, Mardiee WAIT UP!".

Besides my ramblings, I dished out 2 articles from the web... Enjoy...

SOurce 2: Posted on November 20th, 2008 (2)

The stage is set for the final episode of The Amazing Race Asia 3 and it’s an exciting one! Almost eliminated twice in the race, can Ida and Tania sustain their lead to win it all? Will Geoff and Tish’s lack of good chemistry ruin their chance to be 1st? Can Sam and Vince catch up despite their 4-hour penalty?
Read on and find out.

Still in Muscat, Oman

Ida and Tania left the pit stop at 5:42 AM with Geoff and Tish trailing behind by ten minutes. Their first task is to drive to the Office of the Governorate of Muscat.
Upon reaching the site, they encountered an Hours of Operation for 8 AM. Not a problem since Sam and Vince are still hours behind.

Camel Crossing

Next task is for teams to drive to Said’s Camel Farm and transfer 10 camels into a holding pen.

Geoff and Tish were just following Ida and Tania. But they managed to get way ahead and still able to grab something to eat. Maybe Geoff and Tish stopped and ate somewhere?

At around 10 AM, Sam and Vince left the Pit Stop.
Ida and Tania were the first to arrive at the camel farm and finished the task even before other teams arrived.

ROADBLOCK: Locate Key

Teams must then drive to a nearby sandy area and a team member must use a metal detector under the scorching sun to locate a key buried in the sand that will unlock the clue box. There are only 7 correct keys out of 70 and the the sand is really hot.
While on their way, Ida and Tania already felt the heat of the sun and Ida even commented that she didn’t wish her worst enemy to be stuck under it.

Unknowingly, Geoff and Tish’s vehicle got stuck in the sand so Geoff did a lot of pushing to get them out. When they got to the farm, they quickly transferred the camels and head to the roadblock where they met and Sam and Vince along the way. Team Hong Kong’s catching up.

Tania did the roadblock and was clearly having trouble working under the heat. She even stopped to rest and get hydrated. Anyway, she found the correct key even before Geoff and Tish arrived.

Sticky Situation

After a few more difficultness maneuvering their vehicle, Geoff and Tish arrived at the roadblock. They saw Ida and Tania having trouble getting their vehicle out of the sand. They’re at a disadvantage because they lack the power to push their vehicle.

Tish did the roadblock. I wonder why she didn’t wear any gloves for the hot sand.
Back at the camels, Sam and Vince were unfortunate to be stuck with the most uncooperative camels of the bunch. The camels kept running around and dragging the boys who had a hard time with the task.

Tisha found the correct key and they quickly went to their next destination. They manage to overtook Ida and Tania who still can’t get their vehicle out of the sand.
Finally, the Malaysians asked help from the locals to help them with their vehicle and were on their way out as well. I wonder why they didn’t think of that at first?
On their way out, they saw Sam and Vince who also had the problem of being stuck in the sand.

Phuket Here We Come

Teams must then fly to Phuket, Thailand then travel by taxi to Sam Poh Kong Temple to get their next clue.

At the airport, Ida and Tania caught up with Geoff and Tish. There are only a few flights available from Oman going to Phuket so Ida and Tania took a gamble by flying to Dubai on an earlier trip and get a connecting flight from there.

Geoff and Tish took a flight that will take them to Dubai -> Bangkok -> Phuket. Geoff was disappointed when Sam and Vince managed to make the same flight as theirs.
In Dubai, Ida and Tania missed their connecting flight! Uh oh! They had no choice but to get another flight to Phuket via Singapore.

When their flight arrived at Phuket, Geoff and Tish got a head start from seating at the front. Geoff was getting cocky knowing that they’re number one. They arrived at the temple first and got their clue.

Sam and Vince were just minutes behind.

Ice Cold Task and Karma

Teams must get to the Thai Trade Food Ice Factory at the port in Siray Island. Once there, they have to search for a small Amazing Race ice cube buried in a barrel full of ice shavings.

Karma bit Geoff and Tish as their taxi driver told them that he didn’t know where the ice factory is.

Sam and Vince got to the factory first and were surprised to see three untouched barrels of ice. They quickly went on to the task and found the cube for their next clue before other teams arrived. They’re on the lead!

Get to Lam Hin Pier

Teams must make their way to Lam Hin Pier to get their next clue.
Sam and Vince were glad to be ahead but their driver told them that their taxi just ran out of fuel. Not near any gas station, their driver was able to call in a friend so they could transfer taxis. Whew.

Finally, Geoff and Tish got to the ice factory but were clearly frustrated at their driver. They found the cube and their clue and were glad that their driver knew where their next destination is.

Ida and Tania finally arrived at Phuket and rushed to get their clue.

Floating Fisherman

At Lam Hin Pier, teams must ride a long-tail boat and look for a marked fisherman fishing in the middle of the sea. He will give them their next clue.
Sam and Vince arrived first and had no problems getting to the fisherman. They got their clue and were on their way to the next task.
Geoff and Tish got to the pier and went out to the sea. Geoff who seems not to be bothered losing their lead took his time taking the clue from the fisherman. Arrrghhh, stop horsing around.

DETOUR: Pull or Plunge

Teams must make their way via the long-tail boat to a nearby beach for a detour.
In Pull, teams must kayak to a nearby oyster farm and pull the oyster lines till they find the marked shell. They will exchange the shell for their next clue back at the beach.

In Plunge, teams must snorkel and search for a giant clamshell with a pearl inside and exchange it for the clue.

Sam and Vince chose Plunge. When they started doing the task, they found out that it’s hard to search the murky water along with the strong current so they decided to switch to Pull.

We’re Done

On their way to the beach, Geoff and Tish chose to do Pull since Tish is not good in swimming. Geoff was confident that they can catch up with Sam and Vince if they chose to do Pull since he thought they would have a hard time with the kayak. He’s pretty confident with their kayak skills.

When they got to the beach, they saw that Sam and Vince were still at the oyster farm. They quickly got to the kayak but realized that rowing it was harder than they thought. They were just going in circles and even flipped their kayak.

They gave up rowing for a while with Geoff’s temper flaring up. Geoff even mentioned that they’re done. Done with their relationship or done with the race? Either way, they just gave up. Sheesh.

Sam and Vince found the marked shell while Geoff and Tish are still stuck in their kayak. Geoff and Tish got dejected when they saw Sam and Vince heading back while they are still just sitting on their kayak.

Buried Treasure

Teams must get to nearby Rang Yai Beach and dig the sand for a buried treasure chest. They must then carry the chest towards the finish line.
Geoff and Tish eventually found the correct oyster shell and got their clue.
Ida and Tania knew that they were far behind so they just enjoyed the rest of the race. They efficiently did the ice task and then enjoyed the boat ride searching for the fisherman.

Sam and Vince had to do a lot of digging with their hands. The chest was buried deep in the sand and they had to clear lots of sand around it.

The editing crew made it look like that Geoff and Tish can still catch up. However, when they got to Rang Yai Beach, Sam and Vince are nowhere to be seen. Or are the buried treasure locations far apart from each other? Anyway, both Geoff and Tish are still not in speaking terms and they just went on digging.

Ida and Tania did the Plunge task which I think is the easier one. They were goofing around while snorkeling with Tania even lifting up an anchor. They just laughed when they saw that the giant clamshell was placed in shallow waters so there’s no need for swimming.

Towards the Finish Line

Sam and Vince were able to dig the chest out first and carry it towards the finish line where the other eliminated teams are waiting.

When they step on the mat, Allan declared that they’re the official winners of The Amazing Race Asia 3. Congratulations guys! You did well overcoming your disadvantage at the start of the race.

Meanwhile, Geoff didn’t allow Tish to help with the chest and just carried it all by himself towards the finish line for second place. He didn’t even allow Tish to kiss him on the lips and just presented his cheek.

Malaysians Ida and Tania lose lead after missing flight in finals of Amazing Race Asia

BANGKOK: They may not have won The Amazing Race Asia 3 but Malay¬sians Ida Nerina and Tania Khan are still happy they made it to the finals.
The two, dubbed the actress and the heiress in the race, came in third in a heart-stopping and unpredictable finale.

The race was won by Sam Wu and Vince Chung from Hong Kong while Geoff Rodriguez and Tisha Silang from the Philippines came in second.

“I think it was only frustrating because we fell behind, not of our own doing but because of a third party. All our magical planning went to waste,” said Tania.
Tania and Ida were leading in the beginning but lost crucial time when they missed their flight to Phuket, the final destination of The Amazing Race Asia 3.

Previously, in The Amazing Race Asia 2, the Malaysian team consisting of sisters Pamela and Vanessa Chong came in second, and in the first season, Malaysians Joe Jer and Zabrina walked away as champions.

The two contestants from Hong Kong walked away with the US$100,000 (RM365,000) cash prize. Sam and Vince were overjoyed with their win.
“It’s out of this world and an experience money can’t buy,” said Vince.
“It’s been totally unbelievable and we’ve had such wonderful experiences,” said Sam.

The Amazing Race Asia 3 saw 10 teams from all over Asia participate in gruelling challenges, covering over 20,000km in more than seven countries, such as Vietnam, Taiwan, China, India, Oman and Thailand, where the race began and ended.

Rockin in Bangkok for the TARA3 Finale Party (3)
Rockin in Bangkok for the TARA3 Finale Party

Tuesday, Nov 25, 2008 4:59AM / Standard Entry

Even though I was unable to partake in the festivities and merrymaking this year at the Finale Party for The Amazing Race Asia, I'm happy to be able to see that everyone present had a rockin good time! Thanks to Marlene at AXN for sending me these pictures so that I can see how great everyone looks after they're all cleaned up once again!
Natalie definitely was back in Miss Universe mode after the race...

The top three teams always enjoy their special time together on stage to share about the entire experience...

...and don't forget to check out the "bump" on Tania, who's got a little "racer" on da way!
A lot of the teams from Season Two and Season One also arrived in Bangkok to partake in the festivities...

Then there's gotta be a group shot for all the teams from this season in the "Toughest Race Ever"...

Congratulations once again to Sam and Vince from Team Hong Kong. Like I said earlier, you two totally deserved every penny of the prize money!

During the night, it seems that Geoff couldn't keep his eyes--and hands--off the big check from AXN for one hundred thousand US Dollars...

...and even snuck off with it in the end!

I wonder if he tried to cash it too?!

Recession is coming… Precautions..,

Recession is coming… Precautions..,

Recession is coming … make your own
judgment, don’t panic !! Do what is wise.
The recession looks very eminent. It is really time to take pro active
steps to avoid a painful time in the next two years which is how long the
recession is expected to last.

Suggestions:
1. Don’t take any loans, buy homes, properties with loans, or even cash.
Keep as much cash as possible.
2. Pay off as much of personal loans, private loans, as debt collection
will be hastened.
3. Sell any stocks you can even at lower prices.
4. Take money off from Trust Funds.
5. Don’t believe in huge sales forecast from customers, be
extremely prudent, lowest inventories, reduce liabilities.
6. Don’t invest in new capital.
7. If you are selling homes/ properties/ cars , do it now, when you can
get good prices, they are going to fall.
8. Don’t invest in new business proposals.
9. Cancel holiday plans using credit cards.
10. Don’t change jobs, as companies will retrench based on ‘last
in first out’.

Does God still speak to us?

Author Unknown

A young man had been to Wednesday night Bible Study. The Pastor shared about listening to God and obeying the Lord’s voice. The young man couldn’t help but wonder, "Does God still speak to people?"

After service he went out with some friends for coffee and pie and discussed the message. Several different ones talked about how God had led them in different ways.

It was about ten o’clock when the young man started driving home. Sitting in his car, he just began to pray, "God.. If you still speak to people, speak to me. I will listen. I will do my best to obey."

As he drove down the main street of his town, he had the strangest thought, to stop and buy a gallon of milk.

He shook his head and said "God, is that you?" He didn’t get a reply and started on home. But again, the thought, buy a gallon of milk. The young man thought about Samuel and how he didn’t recognize the voice of God, and how little Samuel ran to Eli. "Okay, God, in case that is you. I will buy the milk." It didn’t seem like too hard a test of obedience. He could always use the milk. He stopped and purchased the gallon of milk and started off toward home. As he passed

Seventh Street

, he again felt the urge, turn down that street. "This is crazy", he thought and drove on past the intersection. Again, he felt that he should turn down

Seventh Street

.

At the next intersection, he turned back and headed down Seventh. Half jokingly, he said out loud, "Okay, God, I will." He drove several blocks, when suddenly, he felt like he should stop. He pulled over to the curb and looked around. He was in a semi-commercial area of town. It wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t the worst of either.

The businesses were closed and most of the houses looked dark like the people were already in bed. Again, he sensed something. "Go and give the milk to the people in the house across the street."

The young man looked at the house. It was dark and it looked like the people were either gone or they were already asleep. He started to open the door and then sat back in the car seat. "Lord, this is insane. Those people are asleep and if I wake them up, they are going to be mad and I will look stupid." Again he felt like he should go and give the milk.

Finally, he opened the door, "Okay God, if this is you, I will go to the door and I will give them the milk. If you want me to look like a crazy person, okay. I want to be obedient. I guess that will count for something but if they don’t answer right away, I am out of here." He walked across the street and rang the bell, He could hear some noise inside.

A man’s voice yelled out, "Who is it? What do you want?" Then the door opened before the young man could get away. The man was standing there in his jeans and T-shirt.

He looked like he just got out of bed. He had a strange look on his face and he didn’t seem too happy to have some stranger standing on his doorstep. "What is it?" The young man thrust out the gallon of milk, "Here, I brought this to you."

The man took the milk and rushed down a hallway speaking loudly in Spanish. Then from down the hall came a woman carrying the milk toward the kitchen.

The man was following her holding a baby. The baby was crying. The man had tears streaming down his face. The man began speaking half crying, "We were just praying. We had some big bills this month and we ran out of money. We didn’t have any milk for our baby. I was just praying and asking God to show me how to get some milk."

His wife in the kitchen yelled out, "I ask him to send an Angel with some. Are you an Angel?" The young man reached into his wallet and pulled out all the money he had on him and put it in the man’s hand.

He turned and walked back toward his car and the tears were streaming down his face. He knew that God still answers prayers.

God’s message to Women…

God’s message to Women…

August 29, 2008

Author Unknown:

When I created the heavens and the earth, I spoke them into being. When I created man, I formed him and breathed life into his nostrils. But you, woman, I fashioned after I breathed the breath of life into man because your nostrils are too delicate. I allowed a deep sleep to come over him so I could patiently and perfectly fashion you.

Man was put to sleep so that he could not interfere with the creativity. From one bone I fashioned you. I chose the bone that protects man’s life. I chose the rib, which protects his heart and lungs and supports him, as you are meant to do.

Around this one bone I shaped you. I modeled you. I created you perfectly and beautifully. Your characteristics are as the rib, strong yet delicate and fragile. You provide protection for the most delicate organ in man, his heart. His heart is the center of his being; his lungs hold the breath of life. The rib cage will allow itself to be broken before it will allow damage to the heart.

Support man as the rib cage supports the body. You were not taken from his feet, to be under him, nor were you taken from his head, to be above him. You were taken from his side, to stand beside him and be held close to his side. You are my perfect angel. You are my beautiful little girl. You have grown to be a splendid woman of excellence, and my eyes fill when I see the virtue in your heart. Your eyes — don’t change them. Your lips — how lovely when they part in prayer. Your nose so perfect in form, your hands so gentle to touch.

I’ve caressed your face in your deepest sleep; I’ve held your heart close to mine. Of all that lives and breathes, you are the most like me.

Adam walked with me in the cool of the day and yet he was lonely. He could not see me or touch me. He could only feel me. So everything I wanted Adam to share and experience with me, I fashioned in you: my holiness, my strength, my purity, my love, my protection and support.

You are special because you are the extension of me. Man represents my image — woman, my emotions. Together, you represent the totality of God.

So man — "treat woman well. Love her, respect her, for she is fragile". In hurting her, you hurt me. What you do to her, you do to me. In crushing her, you only damage your own heart, the heart of your Father and the heart of her Father. Woman, support man. In humility, show him the power of emotion I have given you. In gentle quietness show your strength. In love, show him that you are the rib that protects his inner self.

A PICTORIAL TRIBUTE TO "Jaya Shopping Centre"!

I'll be missing you as Jaya Shopping Centre's being demolished. Jaya Shopping Centre was the 1st shopping mall in Petaling Jaya. It opened to Petaling Jaya folks in 1974. In 1994, it received a major Renovation and turned "Blue" with 6 more storey of office suites added on top of the shopping mall.

I remembered vividly the "largest toy store" in the 80s (till 1988 when Toy's R Us Subang Parade surpassed them, Kathy's toys (eventually replaced with Popular). Had a great time "shopping for toys" there. I also remembered buying few watches from Hing's watch and dining at "Jaya Noodle House". Also, I accompanied my dad to "Jaya DIY" Hardware shop located inside the Jaya Shopping Complex.

Without further ado, let's walk in Memory lane as I present you the 20+ Photos I took in memory of Jaya Shopping Centre (on February 2008)... Enjoy!

(Note: This blog entry obviously is NOT RELATED TO USED CAR Review (otoreview) at all. This is just a dedication by me for the now-started-to-demolish Jaya Shopping Centre).

MOVIE REVIEW: IRONMAN

MOVIE REVIEW: IRONMAN

May 2, 2008

Audir8 STARRING
Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Shaun Toub, Leslie Bibb, and Gwyneth Paltrow
DIRECTED BY
Jon Favreau

Based on the Story of IRONMAN Comics by Stan Lee of MARVEL.

REVIEW:

I just got back from the 9.40pm showing and I was surprised to see the theatre (Sunway Pyramid) full, I had to sit in 3rd row. There were 7 of us watching, 5 in 3rd row, 2 in 2nd row.

Iron Man was one of the better super hero movies that have been filmed. It was very entertaining from start to finish. The action was very entertaining to watch. Though I felt it’s not enough, but when the action scenes did happen they were very intense. It was a little bit slow moving in the beginning as well. I think this movie will do well in box office.

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone. It was fun for older people, teens, and even the young kids. The movie was not very bloody and didn’t have any sex at all. So for the parents who want to take their kids it was fine. The beginning started off right away with a bang. It had a lot of intense action and was very exciting. It was even pretty funny throughout. It was Robert Downey Jr. making most of the jokes. He was very fun to watch and did a great job. I think he was the best person for the role of the iron man. It was fun and interesting watching him putting together the iron man. I liked how he kept on improving the IRONMAN making one version after another.

The acting was very good. Especially from Gwyneth Paltrow who played "Pepper Potts" and Robert Downey Jr. who played the iron man. I think that everyone else nailed their job as well. The story was very good as well. I liked how their was a lot of flying and battles between the iron man. The visuals were so amazing. I think they should win for best special effects. Overall this was a very fun to watch movie, THE BEST MOVIE of 2008 so far in my opinion. I think this was a perfect Comics (MARVEL) inspired super hero movie and will be for a long time. Yes, it kicked THE TRANSFORMERS a$$ which I thought it to be Best Film of 2007 (ironically).

It was exciting, entertaining, and fun to watch IN THE BIG SCREEN. You have to be in Cinema to enjoy the CGI, Super effects, life size Gwyneth Paltrow and the "presence" of the IRONMAN. Don’t miss it…

Overall grade: A

MOVIE REVIEW: Ah Long PTE Ltd

AhlongGenre: Comedy/Action
Director: Jack Neo
Cast: Fann Wong, Mark Lee, Richard Low, Jack Lim, KK Wong, Daniel Tan, Lai
Ming, Koh Yet
Runtime: 1 hr 58 mins
Released By: GV/Mediacorp Raintree Pictures/Double Vision/Scorpio East Pictures
Rating: 18PL in Malaysia
Official Website: http://www.ahlongpteltd.com

Synopsis:

Ah Long Pte Ltd is a light-hearted black comedy about the triad world and the
money-lending business. Instead of treating the subject of Ah Longs
(money-lenders) seriously, the movie takes on a humorous and sarcastic treatment.
It depicts how a young lady tries to restructure her money-lending triad into a
professional and ‘loving’ triad that stands against the use of violence after
she takes over from her triad leader who has retired. Her various restructuring
plans (which are no doubt very creative) bring about hilarious results.

Chen Jun (played by Richard Low) is the leader of Shao He Triad. The story
opens with him deciding to “retire” from the triad business. Prior to his
retirement, he elects Wang Li Hua (played by Fann Wong), a young but tough
girl, as his successor.

Li Hua believes that changes need to be made to the current money lending
system. Although Li Hua prioritizes the triad’s success, she is very much
against the idea of using violent means to collect debts. Therefore, with the
help of some professional consultants, Li Hua and several of her subordinates
(played by KK and Daniel Tan) start adopting a series of creative tactics to
attract money lenders and practice hilarious methods to pressure the money-lenders
to repay in a non-violent way. However, Li Hua’s plan of “restructuring” her
triad meets with obstacles and opposition from the majority of the conservative
elders in both her own triad and rival triad.

At the brighter end of the world, Mr. Fang (played by Mark Lee) is a
kind-hearted dance instructor who is slightly sissy in character. Fate has it
that Mr. Fang runs into Li Hua on numerous occasions by chance. Since Li Hua’s mother
has been pressuring her to get married, Li Hua decides to force Mr. Fang to
marry her. Surprisingly, Mr. Fang agrees to it, wanting to prove his
masculinity. Though finding it hard to accept the fact that Li Hua is a triad
head, Mr. Fang approves of her effort to minimize the use of violence.
Subsequently, he offers to help Li Hua out by introducing creative ways to
reduce violent methods of debt collection.

Movie Review:

The last thing I need on an out-of-luck day (bad morning at work, an
unsuccessful attempt to get a lunch date, followed a terrible fast food dinner
– I could continue, but that warrants another write-up altogether) is a
frustrating comedy that tries to make you laugh at some really unfunny antics.
And I thought local auteur Jack Neo’s latest movie could perk up my day, but
no, it got me down in the dumps instead. Shucks.

Primarily shot in Malaysia, the Chinese New Year blockbuster (OPENED IN
MALAYSIA IN MARCH 29 THOUGH) tells the
story of how Fann Wong’s Li Hua (what’s with the uncreative name anyway?) tries
to revamp her loan shark triad into a sensitive new age triad (SNAT – now,
that’s more creative in my own humble opinion) that promotes loving and caring.
You see, this woman has a heart, unlike her ruthless predecessor (Richard Low).
Throw in an effeminate dance instructor with a heavy Malaysian accent (Mark
Lee) as her husband and you’d get a Chinese New Year blockbuster aimed at
milking ang pow money from viewers in

Singapore

and across the Causeway.

Do not get me wrong, because I’m no snob when it comes to watching movies.
While I believe that there is an audience for every particular genre, there was
a time when I truly enjoyed Neo’s movies. I remember laughing, crying and most
importantly, touched, when I watched I Not Stupid (2002). I remember being
pleasantly surprised when Neo took on nostalgia and politics in the
well-produced Homerun (2003). And I remember laughing at the silly but funny
jokes in last year’s offering Just Follow Law – it even brought lead actor
Gurmit Singh to

Taiwan

’s
Golden Horse Awards ceremony with a Best Actor nomination beside Lust,
Caution’s Tony Leung and The Detective’s Aaron Kwok.

With this suspicious carbon copy of Cho Jin-gyu’s My Wife Is A Gangster 3
(2006), Neo may have made his most unimpressive movie yet. The similarities are
uncanny, but I will not go into that. Instead, I was more disturbed to see a
scene suspiciously taken from Stephen Chow’s (an incidental competitor at this
festive season’s movie war) Shaolin Soccer (2001).

Still, credit goes to Low for comfortably translating his character on
screen with a fluent dialect vocabulary filled with vulgarities. He is the one
reason why you would be sitting through the movie. Lee’s sissy character hits
the right comedic spot, but lacks a certain “oomph” to make you feel for his
character. As for Wong, her menacing cold stare sort of left me in the cold
because I just cannot empathize with her character. There are a handful of
other unknown supporting characters which give forgettable performances.

The filmmakers also try to jazz things up with numerous song sequences, some
computer generated effects (some more unnecessary than others) and a typical
slapstick soundtrack that is on the edge of being irritating, if nothing else.

The production value may have increased from the earlier days of less
sophisticated camera shots and audio mixing, but gone is the heart of Neo’s
movies. But Neo need not worry; the cash registers will still be ringing. It’s
just that, at the end of this 118-minute movie, I left the theatre without the
feeling of having heard a good story, and feeling that my day cannot be any
worse.

Gadget/s: My New toy review: K810i

Gadget/s review: My NEW TOY: K810i

I GOT A NEW TOY! Sony Ericsson K810i, Just bought on Thursday, fresh from the Phone Shop. Here’s a review of my NEW phone. Why I bought this phone? Well my reason’s stated at the “Conclusion” of this phone review.

NOTE: Got this review from http://secentral.net/forum/ (Sony Ericsson Singapore user group) forum by an Anonymous Forummer. START OF REVIEW (next paragraph onwards). My OWN Opinion’s in “Conclusion”.

When K810 was first announced in Feb 07 by SE the initial response was that it is an cosmetics improvement over the k800 cybershot series and critics was right on it. But the phone I believed are mainly targeted at those using the older K series and 1st time SE user. User of K800 should read no further as this is the same phone with just its outer makeover with no significant changes to its firmware.

The first thing unusual about the phone is its button, which hate it or love it, is it's good feel for the fingers as compare to the normal keypad generally on SE series (except W880) is all close together. Pressing wrong keys/button is a thing of the past as the buttons are very much space apart. The one thing I cant get over is the shiny surface of the keys area which attracts fingerprints and smudges like the Z610 surface, fussy user like me will give the phone a miss over this “feature”.

K810 keypad like all new SE phones have an internet shortcut button next to the call button which my seem to be an gift from heaven for tech savvy but for me it is seem to be a nuisance to user as most of the time it get activated even without most user knowledge. And yes Telcos charge you for this connection time (conspiracy between Maxis and…?!?!……<- don’t sue me).

The back of the phone is rubberize like those from the W880 which generally gives the phone a nice feel and hold as oppose to the cheap feel of the previous series.

The next best thing of the K810 over the K800 is the shutter itself. K800 shutter have the overhang and shaky feeling due to its awkward placement and the K810 have since rectified this by shaping the back profile of the phone to incorporate the shutter itself. The cuts down the accidental activation of the cam by shutter as complain by most K800 user.

Radio and Media player

K810 have an built in tuner and with the supplied headset acting as the antenna, reception of the radio channels are clear and loud.
The media player for MP3 are an improvement over the K750’s but still lose out to the W-series player but since this is marketed as a Cybershot so the comparison stops here. The player can identified song/tracks or artist by the ID3 tag on the MP3 thereby playing it or through user customize playlist.

Cameras and features

Activation of the cam can be by menu based or just simply sliding the shutter down , user will see the 1,4,7,* key symbol lightening in a blue tint as the phone transit from phone to cam mode. Each key correspond to Image size , Focus , Timer and Flash respectively . Movies record are in 3gp format. K810 like the K800 comes with the Xenon flash which adds a true flashlight capability to the mobile phone , user of K750 can forget about using this as a torchlight as the Xenon are powered by 2 large capacitor unlike the k750 2 bright LEDs.

For new user there is a BestShot™ features which let user takes 9 shot at once of the same scene, user can choose which frame is the best to choose from or all 9. Also preview of the photos taken by the cam can be access during standby mode by pressing the 2 buttons located at the top left and right of the LCD.

Firmware and Menu

SE has retained the general looks of the menu itself since the T610 days and is quite easy to use and navigate. The joystick 4 direction can be customize to individual user shortcut needs

The K810 does have the capability to upgrade it firmware over the air but the high GPRS cost may deters user from this. Flight mode is an standard on most SE models and what is does is that for places that restrict cellphone signal ,user can turn on this features.

Battery use are the BSt-33 series with the CST75 charger which have the capability to charge and use the phone concurrently and the K810 does comes with 128mb M2 supplied. BUT Only lasted for 1 ½ (18 hours) on a single charge only.

Conclusion /MY RAMBLINGS!

The SonyEricsson K810i's a good phone with good photo capability (“cybershot” mah). For me, K810 is an good choice as it’s a sizable upgrade from my SonyEricsson K618i. From 2mp manual focus with NO FLASH to 3.2mp Autofocus + Xenon flash, Also, FM Radio with RDS, Track ID. But downside, slightly bigger and heavier than my K618i.

K810i, It’s an obvious choice for me because Motorola and SAMSUNG’S OUT (NOT- user friendly, NOT used them), Nokia E65 my dad already owned one, I ACTUALLY LOVED SOME OF THE NOKIA N-series, BUT N73’s TOO OUTDATED AND TOO COMMON (August 06 model!), Nokia N70’s too bulky, Nokia N81’s Expensive, Nokia N76’s too Auntie or Ah Lian looking (RED COLOUR!!!). Nokia N77, N82 and N95 don’t bother, WAY OUT OF BUDGET. Budget’s below RM1000. Here's hoping for buying a Nokia N82 sometime Next year February (as my Next phone). I'm sure as seen in N73, by then the pricing will drop.

Note that K810i was my 2nd choice. 1st choice was SE P1i. LOVED that PDA Phone very much. But too $$. AP set RM1300!

Below, My Previous Phone, SonyEricsson K618i Black.
Also, I have 512MB M2 memory card from my K618i can transfer to the K810i (which only came with a pathetic 128MB) AND lastly, I’m used to SonyEricsson interface and SMS having owned 4 Ericsson/Sony Ericsson.

Here’s list of phones I’ve owned: NEC DB500 UK-spec (1999 till 2000), Nokia 3210 (2000 till 02 April). Ericsson T39 (2002 Apr -2004 Apr) => SE T610i (2004 Apr to 2005 Nov) => (a Symbian Nokia in between, Nokia 3230 – 2005/11 till 2006 Dec) => SE K618i (2006 Dec till 2008 March 19 and now, SE K810i (March 19 - ???).

NOTE that I owned a phone for AT LEAST 1 YEAR, Unlike Adults and kids nowadays who changed hand phone every 1 to 2 months.

The BONUS is I Bought the Phone for RM770 ONLY, AP set, warranty from “Final Choice” at a Hand phone shop in Old Town, Petaling Jaya. Original Midland phone still selling for RM1099. Wow! What a HUGE difference.

END OF REVIEW. Thanks for Reading this.

Gadgets 101: Gadgets rechargable batteries care

GADGETS 101: Gadget's rechargable battery (batteries) care. Especially Notebook, Handphones and Digital Cameras.

Hi, this is a new twist of this blog. I'll be writing articles, giving reviews and tips on Gadgets. Here's my 1st post:

Q: "Ever wonder why your gadget's Li-Ion or Ni-MH rechargable battery kept on losing charge or lifespan getting shorter and shorter? OR Battery suddenly goes from 50% to 0%?
A:It's because your gadgets' battery (batteries)'s not "CONDITIONED".

Q: What is "battery condition" AND how it is done?
A: Conditioning battery's where you drained your battery (wait until your gadget batteries' EMPTY) before you recharge them. Make sure you charge it full. Make it a habit to condition it often and your batteries will LAST (No joke).

Example, my 2004 DELL INSPIRON 510m laptop. Despite it's age, its Li-Ion battery is still good for 2 hours of heavy usage (Wifi and music at the same time), or 1 1/2 hour playing DVD Non stop. As a comparison, my friend's 2006 Fujitsu Laptop's battery's losing charge day by day, from 4 hrs at new to just 2 hrs MAX. Why is it so? Again, conditioning battery's the secret.

This is NOT just applicable to Laptop's battery. Any Li-Ion and NimH batteries need to be conditioned (or layman's term: EXERCISE). Remember: NO Recharging of battery if you still have 50% Charge, this will affects your battery life in near future. MAKE sure it's EMPTY (5% for Notebook and 0% for other gadgets) before you charge it.

Additional tips FOR NOTEBOOK/LAPTOP: IF YOU want to Use AC Adapter, FIRST use up all the battery, then only you plug to the Wall outlet. Otherwise, make sure your battery fully charged before you plug on the Wall outlet.

Congratulations to Adrain and Colin for...

Congratulations Colin and Adrian for…

February 25, 2008

Congratulations Colin and Adrian for Winning The Amazing Race Asia season 2 (TARA2). They proved that they can win despite Adrian’s disability (Deafness). Adrian’s Knowledge in Flags prevailed over Pam and Vanessa and Marc and Rovilson. For Marc and Rovilson, they sent the wrong person to do the task, Rovilson is super blur. This enables the Chong sisters to overtook them.

I really enjoyed the reality show. It’s like being part of the race (just by watching) "visiting" those 10 countries and learning the cultures. Almost all countries I haven’t been before (except Singapore). I LOVED TARA2, Can’t wait for TARA3.

Malaysians can’t have intelligent discussions, they’re spammers

Malaysians can’t have intelligent discussions, they’re spammers

January 11, 2008

Here’s the thing, I can talk to a 18 year old American, and she can talk about issues of abortion, homosexuality, religion, stem cell research, the war on Iraq, corruption, capitalism, communism, socialist elements, Gary Kasparov, the selling out of the music industry and, last but not least, her own country’s dumb leadership.

And when I say talk about, I mean we discuss points in a civilized manner. There was no yelling of how Malaysia is an Islamic country.

There was no accusations of anyone being a bloody racist.

There were no "close one eyes".

There was no "bocor every month".

So by this, she basically speaks better, and has more points than at least 3 of our members in Parliament, with more discipline, manners and patience than that of our de facto Law Minister.

Now the thing with this is, have you found a Malaysian who can talk about the same things, other than John Lee at InfernalRamblings.com?

Sure, there are those who talk of these in hushed tones.

Why?

I have no clue whatsoever. Perhaps they think that having an opinion on the matter would cause God to strike them down where they stand.

And yet, if you were to open your mailboxes, these quiet individuals are the loudest spammers on Earth!

"Send this e-mail out to 10 people, or something bad will happen"

"I got this e-mail from an imam in Mecca"

"Friendster is closing accounts if you don’t forward this message"

"Starbucks and Coffee Bean are haram"

"Siti Nurhaliza’s Wedding Pics"

"Ashraf Sinclairs pics by the beach"

"Allah grant me patience."

See, this is where the Malaysian population thrives, at gossiping. Not through blogs, or the papers, or even the mail, but through e-mail.

You won’t hear them talk about it in person, or actually having an intelligent, self written e-mail, no!

Spammers. A curse be upon you.
