ARTICLE: Three Ways Cybercriminals Can Take Down Small Businesses

Three Ways Cybercriminals Can Take Down Small Businesses

Monday, 27 September 2010 11:04 PM

Cybercrimes against businesses happens more often than you actually think but many organizations are yet to realize how cyber-attacks can drive them out of business. This holds true especially for small businesses out there who think they are too small to become a target.

Symantec has listed three reasons why small business might need to think again about their cyber-security concerns (or lack of):

Steal All the Money in Your Bank Account

One of the most common tools that cybercriminals used is called “Zeus”, which functions as login and password information collector. Believe it or not, the most lucrative victim through this attack is actually small businesses since they have fewer safeguards in place to guard their financial transactions even though a small business generally has more money than a consumer.

Steal Your Intellectual Property and Customer Information

When your operations depend a lot on data, even a single byte of them is deemed very valuable. So, when they got lost or stolen, it represent not only as a security breach but also, a financial lost. In fact, Symantec’s own survey showed that 100 percent of their respondent saw information lost as direct financial cost. This is exactly why SMBs must be very careful with how they handle and process customers’ as well as their own financial data.

Drive Your Customers Away

Social networking and other “Web 2.0” solutions are a hit among consumers but even they are not safe from cyber-attacks. Once a criminal has hijacked a social media account belong to a brand or an organization, they can run scams, send spams and infect unsuspecting consumers with malware. This would obviously have negative effects among customers.

Scary, isn’t it? You can learn more about these factors, their importance and how to tackle them swiftly - for the sake of your business - at Symantec Connect.

A Poem from Jesus!

So Beautiful

■If you never felt pain, Then how would you know that I am a Healer?

■If you never had to pray, How would you know that I am a Deliverer?

■If you never had a trial, How could you call yourself an overcomer?

■If you never felt sadness, How would you know that I am a Comforter?

■If you never made a mistake, How would you know that I am a forgiver?

■If you knew all, How would you know that I will answer your questions?

■If you never were in trouble, How would you know that I will come to your rescue?

■If you never were broken, Then how would you know that I can make you whole?

■If you never had a problem,How would you know that I can solve them?

■If you never had any suffering, Then how would you know what I went through?

■If you never went through the fire, Then how would you become pure?

■If I gave you all things, How would you appreciate them?

■If I never corrected you, How would you know that I love you?

■If you had all power, Then how would you learn to depend on me?

■If your life was perfect, Then what would you need me for?

Love, Jesus

Singapore Story as narrated by Ah Beng in town

The history of Singapore as narrated by Ah Beng in town

Under the 'ang mo' we all live happily together, no complain.
Malaysia & Singapore is one big family in our brains.
One day we both like 2 durians cannot get along.
Got sharp thorns, poke each other, until 'buay song.'
One moment like brothers, can give and take.
Next moment we kena kicked out by the leg.
Wah! Our towkay also cry like mad,
We all also feel very very sad.

Our neigbours all say, 'Wah they all sure to die!
They got nothing, how to get next bowl of rice?'
So 'boh pian,' we all work day and night.
We also join the army so that we can fight.
We don't care others 'see us no up'.
But actually inside we very pain in the heart.
Then slowly hor we grow rich and a bit fat.
Now others talk about us also got some respect.

They scratch their heads and say
'Very funny! Got nothing how come they can still make money?'
Last time also got no money to buy ice-cream cone.
Nowadays even small kids can also afford hand phone.
Sea port, airport also can become Number One.
He! He! Sometimes think about it also very fun.
But some people look at us also not happy.
Actually they jealous don't want to say only.
So every time their country got something wrong.
They all say Singapore's behind it all along.

Everybody know we water no enough.
They turn off tap only we all cannot last.
They threaten us with water supply and shout 'Cut! Cut! Cut!'
Aiyoh! They all think the water is one big ketupat.
We all hear already also 'buay tahan'
Wah liao, they think we small can makan!

But now they 'cow pay cow bu' we all not very scared.
We want to build water desalination plant already so not so bad.
But their own economy now all go bust.
Got to sell water otherwise money no enough.
Then another neighbor say Singapore no friend friend,
Got so much money, a bit more also donno how to lend.
They say we all only one small red dot,
Like the center of a big dartboard.
Maybe they think we mouse and they cat,
That's why they suka suka anyhow talk like that.
But we all still send them a lot of rice.
Show the world we actually very very nice.

Sometimes we 'cho ho sim' also kena whack.
But we all gentleman wan, don't want to fight back.
I think hor maybe they don't understand us very well.
That's why relationship sometimes like heaven sometimes like hell
Some say aiyah our prosperity is all due to luck,
That's why we all siao siao' can still win the Tiger Cup
I think hor, Singapore is like chilli padi in a pot -
Size small small but still very very hot.

On the 31st of August this year, it was a day of true shame, people got slashed, and were racially insulted on our Independence Day, and more importantly apart from government buildings, no one raised our flag. It hit me more than others, as two of those people who were hurt were my friends. It was not the beating that they received that hurt more, it was the words thrown to them .... Balik negara kamu ....

I am not trying to be a hero here, I am just sick of the postings of hate that is going back and fourth, and the fact we tend to sit quiet and do nothing while the country is being torn to pieces.
The first segment may sound unfamiliar because it is less practiced, but is part of the whole rukun negara. Note the words "cita-cita tersebut" which was referring to the top segment of the rukun negara.
BAHAWASANYA NEGARA KITA MALAYSIA mendukung cita-cita hendak:
mencapai PERPADUAN yang lebih erat di kalangan seluruh masyarakatnya;
memelihara satu cara HIDUP DEMOKRATIK;
mencipta satu MASYARAKAT ADIL di mana kemakmuran Negara akan dapat dinikmati bersama secara adil dan saksama;
menjamin satu cara LIBERAL terhadap TRADISI-TRADISI KEBUDAYAANNYA yang kaya dan berbagai corak;

KELUHURAN PERLEMBAGAAN
KEDAULATAN UNDANG-UNDANG
KESOPANAN DAN KESUSILAAN

How far have we gone off track? When did you read that? If we ourselves do not hold to that as true and just, then Merdeka has no meaning and the Constitution has no meaning. If the government and the opposition can't hold that which they swore to protect because of fear of losing the support of the Malay grassroots, then they are no longer legitimate as they have broken the promise made during Merdeka. If you believe in that written above, you are empowered by this nation to stay here. And those who challenge that are by default challenging the rukun negara.
Let's not fall to their level and raise above them by showing they can hit us, bully us, insult us, but this is OUR COUNTRY and if they don't like it, find an island, a boat and make yourself a country.
Don't give up on Malaysia. Giving up or dividing ourselves on the grounds of race will destroy everything your forefathers did. And more importantly, you let people like Perkasa win. Every nation in the world has its ultras, some stronger than others. Its just a fact that we can't eradicate stupidity but stupidity only becomes out of control when we “layan” them.  I have been racially insulted before when I was studying abroad, "GO HOME YOU F*****G ASIAN...". Then, I did not take a stand as I wanted to go back to my country so I answered, "In 5 months, bitch, and then ran for my life". But this is my country, and hitting another is hitting me as well.
16th September is Malaysia Day. It was the true date that the country called Malaysia was formed with the inclusion of Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. It was the day we were called this land Malaysia under one King, one constitution, one one name to call us all Malaysians.
This 16th September, celebrate it by making parties, BBQ, dinners, events, jogs, marathons, anything with your friends, take pictures of it post it up with OUR FLAG! SHOW these idiots that WE HAVE every right to this country as they do. OUR forefathers fought and died for Malaysia. I don't need a University corrupt drop-out to tell me who belongs here.

Forward it to your friends, but of course, celebrate it, it is Our country, Our flag. No one has more of a right to be here than the other person.

HERE'S ONE OF THE VICTIM'S ACCOUNT:

It Happened to Me, It Could Happen to You (Update 4th Sept)

by Lau Chee Kin on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 5:13pm
The typical Merdeka Eve night started with an urge to watch the fireworks celebration in KLCC ended up in a racist attack by a group of teenagers. So, me and a friend of mine thought of a good solution to avoid the traffic jam in that area by walking from the office in Jalan Imbi through Pavillion, to Jalan Kia Peng through Convention Center to KLCC.
Sounds like an ideal plan as the path is a frequent walkway and is even advertised in Pavillion as 'Bridge to KLCC'. (Just to note that we didnt go into any dark alley)

At 10.15pm, we started walking towards Pavillion, stopped to get a drink at Starbucks and proceeded ahead. As we walk, we came across people from various races and foreign tourists along the way.

On Jalan Kia Peng, we walked past Novotel Hotel, Hakka Restaurant, Menara HLA and was reaching the junction of Jalan Pinang when a group of about 10 teenage Malay youngsters walking from the opposite direction. They looked like typical youths, giggling and talking to each other.

As we walked past them, suddenly one of them turned around and started to make a flying kick to my friend. Noticing the 'fun' he is having, his other friends started to do the same to me. It was so sudden and all I was thinking at the moment was, "What the hell did we do to them?"

Both of us ended up kneeling on the ground for a moment before more kicks and punches came flying in. Even though both of us had our tripod strapped across our shoulder, we were too shocked to react to it. Eventually one punch landed right on my right forehead and I started to bleed profusely. Seeing that they eventually stopped and walked away.WALKED AWAY, damn it. They were not even afraid to run but just WALKED AWAY like winning a game or something. The last thing I remember hearing from one of them was "Baliklah ke negara asal"
Imagine hearing this statement on Merdeka Eve.

I knew I was bleeding but I didnt know how bad. I could feel the right side of my head swollen and wet but I did not try to look at myself through a mirror. My friend also suffered bruises on the body and face.  By that time there were more people walking around us but they did not stop to see what was wrong. I don't blame them, it was a poorly lit area just in front of Menara Pinang. We recovered and continued walking towards the Convention Center. The guards were symphatetic to let us in to use the washroom to clean up. It was then I saw my bloody face.

I did not take a picture of myself then as it is not my intention to send a horror message. This is not a message of sympathy. It's a account of a random person walking on a street.

Eventually after cleaning up, we walked back to the Police Booth in Pavillion to relate the incident. The response from the officer: "This cannot happen, we have all our men on the streets" (Well, not on the street we got beaten up ...)

Apparently informing the police booth stationed in a public area is NOT MAKING A POLICE REPORT. WTF? Apparently we have to go to a Hospital, get some treatment and make a complain/report at the police counter there. I would be dead by then, ain't I?

Is this how the police maintained that they have improved  street crimes? By not noting down petty crimes like gang bang which did not result into hospitalization? Would we be taken seriously if only we landed in the hospital?

What we did was, we went back to the office, rested til this morning, went to a nearby clinic to get some bandages and medic. What else to do? I can't identify my assailants, and my wounds are not death-threatening.

If I had not wanted to celebrate Independence Day, would I walk or drive to the venue?
If I was not thirsty would I stop for 5 mins to get my drink and missed them completely?
If I had held my tripod as a defensive weapon earlier, would I save myself or get more beating instead?
If I'm not Chinese, would I get the same 'treatment'?

All I want to say in the end is ...
Forward this to your friends (so that they will be careful on the streets)
Forward this to your 'friendly police' (so that they know the procedure is wrong)
Forward this to any politician/newspaper (so that he/she can be the champion for highlighting this to the government)

UPDATE 1ST SEPT:
It was not my intention as attention seeking whore. I'm merely highlighting that it could happen to anyone at anywhere when you least expected.
It is wrong to  say that we are all patriotic and everyone is following the 1Malaysia concept of togetherness when the roots (our teens) are out portraying the opposite.
This is not political. People messaging to say if we change government or vote for the other party this will not happen.I don't believe so.
This 'low crime rate' statistic is ridiculous when all these 'reports' at Police Booths are unrecorded. What is the function of all these booths being setup all around housing area, public area, etc if these reports must be done at the main police station?

Went to Dang Wangi for an official report of the incident. 15mins to get the report written. The was assigned to an Inspector In-Charge who is still at the old office at Stadium Merdeka. (DangWangi station just moved and the officers are between places) Waited for an hour and got more questions asked. Had pictures of our injuries taken, and was informed that they had some suspects caught for a different beating. I dont think we can identify them as it was dark.

UPDATE 4TH SEPT:
1st Sept : Story picked up by FreeMalaysanMirror, Malaysia-Today.net and numerous blogs. Bernama confirmed the story at midnight.
2nd Sept : Other newspapers followed up.
3rd Sept : Sinar Harian reported that the Police is investigating the Police Booth incident and 'hoped that the writer would give full cooperation '. 3.30pm - Received a call from the Inspector to give additional statement tomorrow.
4th Sept :  11.00am - Andrew & I went to Dangi Wangi again to give our full account of the entire night. Faizal's article on unity and celebrating Malaysia Day as I appears on Malaysia-Today.net.

The Stig's ID is 'Top Gear' secret no more

By JENNIFER QUINN, Associated Press Writer Jennifer Quinn,
Associated Press Writer – Wed Sep 1, 12:01 pm ET

LONDON – The opaque visor of one of Britain's most famous helmets has been lifted.

AP – This photo combo shows an undated file photo of the driver for the BBC motoring programme Top Gear 'The …

The identity of The Stig, the always-anonymous test driver on the popular television show "Top Gear," has long been a closely guarded secret. On Wednesday, lawyers said the BBC had been refused an injunction blocking publication of a book revealing the identity of the character.

Shortly after, publishers HarperCollins said in a statement that a 33-year-old racing driver named Ben Collins "has a great story to tell about his seven years as The Stig, which will appeal to a wide audience beyond just motoring enthusiasts."

Calling it a "victory for freedom of speech," HarperCollins said the book will be published in Britain on Sept. 16.

The white-suited Stig is the second in the role; the first Stig, who wore a black suit and helmet, was Perry McCarthy. He left the show in 2003 after his identity was revealed.

The show has a long-standing policy of not commenting on The Stig's identity. A "Top Gear" spokeswoman said no decision has been made on whether the character will be back when the show returns.

"Top Gear" is one of the BBC's most successful programs, and is seen in more than 100 countries around the world. Alongside the show's three garrulous hosts, The Stig is an always-silent presence, fearlessly navigating the show's test track in glamorous cars.

Speculation over his identity is a favorite pastime for fans of the show, and the "Top Gear" website sells T-shirts proclaiming "I am The Stig," "I am not The Stig," and "I am The Stig's fat cousin," among others.

"The whole point of The Stig is the mystique — the bizarre characteristics he has, the wonderment created about what he might think, feel, do or look like," producer Andy Wilman said in a post on the show's website. "Kids adore the conceit, and I believe adults, although they know it's a man in a suit (or is it?) gladly buy into the whole conceit because they find it entertaining."

The Stig's Facebook page — which more than 2.5 million people "like" — says he was recently attacked by a goose, that his ears "are not where you would expect them to be," and that he thinks the movie "Star Wars" is a documentary.

The BBC said it sought the injunction — the hearing was held in private — because viewers like the mystery surrounding the driver's identity and it's "vital to protect the character of The Stig."

The broadcaster said that the judgment does not prevent them from taking the issue further in the courts.

'The BBC will not be deterred from protecting such information from attack no matter when or by whom it should arise," the broadcaster said in a statement.

Collins' website says he has raced on the Formula Three and NASCAR circuits, and drove James Bond's Aston Martin in the 2008 film "Quantum of Solace."
